Sunflower Seedling

With nothing much happening in the garden — after all, it is mid-December in North Texas — I’ve taken a strangely morbid interest in a sunflower seedling that sprouted about a week ago. It’s undoubtedly a birdseed remnant, as I didn’t plant any sunflowers in that particular area this year. Our weather has been so up and down lately — in the 70s one day, in the 30s the next, overcast skies and unexpectedly damp conditions — that it’s surprising more seeds haven’t popped up. I’m sure they’re as confused as the rest of us!

I have no idea how long this little seedling will last. We don’t have a freeze anywhere in the immediate forecast so it may be around for a while. I’m almost tempted to gather up some insulating materials to put over it when our next freeze does occur!

I’ll continue to keep watch over this seedling and post some pictures of its progression. Who knows, by spring it might be six feet tall! Or just a memory.

  1. At least it was moist enough for it to sprout! Any rain is good rain when there is drought. Good luck to your little seedling–may it be rained upon! 🙂
