I took a quiet walk in the backyard this evening. As I wandered about I listened and watched as twilight settled. The birds, so manic during the daytime, slowly fell into their nightly routines, quickly finding places to nestle undisturbed until morning. The faint coooo-coo-coo of the Mourning Doves followed me as I rounded a corner to search out yesterday’s Daffodil (Narcissus) buds. Today several had become blooms!
The first flowers of (almost) spring may be short-lived. While today the thermometer topped out at 80F, tomorrow is forecast to be only in the low 40s and freezing rain and snow is a possibility over the next three days.
It’s a rare occurrence that we don’t have a really hard freeze, snow or ice after the Daffodils have begun blooming. There are so many ups and downs in the weather at this time of year!
Earlier in the week the weather folks were forecasting nighttime lows to bottom out at around 20F. Happily, today’s forecast had those same temperatures at around 28F for a couple of nights. So perhaps — we’ll keep our fingers crossed! — the Daffodils will survive and continue to brighten the garden.
The buds are in various stages of development so there should be a steady stream of blooms for quite some time.
Turning away from the yellow and white blooms of the Daffodils, I headed back toward the house. A faint chip-chip of a Cardinal and somewhat closer chear-up chear-up of a Robin followed me, as did the rustle of Sparrows settling in the shrubs. What a glorious ending to a beautiful day…
You picture of daffodils are inspiring. Thanks for sharing. If you ever get to D.C. Or Virginia, let me know. Would live to compare notes with you

Thanks so much! The closest I’ve gotten to that area over the past few years is western New York (I know, it really isn’t close!) where most of my husband’s family lives. I love your area, though. I lived in North Carolina for several years and really liked it. It would make a great retirement location! And should I ever end up in the area, for whatever reason, I’ll be sure to let you know.

I love your daffodils! We usually have at least one snowfall after the daffodils have started to bloom, but in spring here it is rare to have temperatures in the low 20s, so fingers crossed that your daffodils continue to brighten the yard đŸ™‚

We’ve missed out on all but a very brief period of freezing rain so far, but the temperatures dipped further than the weather report said they would. It was 25F on our thermometer this morning, so I don’t know how the buds will do. The next several days will tell!

Such bright white and yellow blooms to brighten even the dreariest day. It is usually heat and dryness here in Central Texas that undoes the daffys once they begin to bloom, rather than harsh cold. Under ideal circumstances things just stay chilly and moist and those little sunny flowers are shining out for days and days. Spring!

They do bring some cheer to late winter. Hopefully the buds will survive the next few days!

Lovely pictures. I always look forward to seeing daffodils as yellow is one of my favourite flower colours. I grow them on the plot but it’ll be a while yet before they bloom. xx

Thanks. They’re one of the first harbingers of spring here, but oftentimes they’re a little too anxious to make an appearance.

Thanks. Daffodils seem to do well here. They’re usually done blooming and are drying up by the time the real heat sets in.

How wonderful to see your daffs and read about it being 80! Wish I could see them in person. As you know, we have quite the wait until our daffs are blooming. Until then, I’m enjoying your spring vicariously!

Lovely and a lot sooner than in my garden – I still have to make do with crocuses, galanthus.
